John Brophy was a Canadian ice hockey coach and general manager who is best known for his colorful personality and his success with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). Brophy was born in Montreal, Quebec, on July 22, 1933. He began his hockey career as a player in the Quebec Junior Hockey League, but he quickly realized that his true calling was coaching. Brophy got his first coaching job in 1962 with the St. Catharines Black Hawks of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). He led the Black Hawks to two OHA championships and was named the league's Coach of the Year in 1964.

In 1967, Brophy was hired as the head coach of the Hershey Bears. The Bears were a struggling team at the time, but Brophy quickly turned them into a contender. He led the Bears to their first Calder Cup championship in 1969, and he won two more Calder Cups with the team in 1974 and 1980. Brophy was also named the AHL's Coach of the Year in 1974 and 1980.
